James Knox

Welcome! I’m James Knox, a fully accredited BABCP cognitive Behavioural Therapist and EMDR therapist in training. I have an extensive background in mental health having trained as a psychological wellbeing practitioner and as a CBT therapist and in my career have worked across hospital, forensic and primary care settings.

Along the way, I’ve trained in supporting people living with long-term health conditions and have training and experience in integrating Compassion Focused Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy into my practice. This diversity allows me to adjust and personalize therapy to fit peoples needs.

I currently work day to day with Veterans and the armed forces community with depression anxiety, PTSD and moral injury. I have enjoyed working with OCD and other anxiety disorders through my career.

I focus on creating a space  where people feel understood  and where we can work together to make the changes that you need. I currently work day to day with the armed forces community and have worked with all common mental health problems over my career but have an interest and extra experience working with anxiety disorders, in particular PTSD, OCD  and panic.

James Knox CBT therapist

Hello, I'm James.

As a seasoned Cognitive Behavioural Therapist (CBT), EMDR
Practitioner, and Senior Lecturer, I am deeply committed to guiding individuals on their path to mental wellness.

My approach to therapy is rooted in the belief that each persons journey is unique, and my role is to work alongside you, providing the tools and support you need to navigate the challenges you are facing.

As a Senior Lecturer in CBT, my approach is informed by the most up-to-date practices and recommendations. I provide a compassionate, tailored approach to address your unique experiences.

Whether you're dealing with anxiety, depression, stress, or other challenges, we’ll work together to uncover and address the patterns affecting your life.

I have extensive experience with social anxiety, OCD, and PTSD, using CBT techniques and EMDR to support trauma recovery.

Your well-being is at the forefront of our work together. I strive to create a safe, non-
judgmental space where you can express yourself freely and feel truly heard. Each
session is designed to be meaningful and effective, with a focus on your specific goals and needs.

How can CBT help

''We don't see things how they are, we see things how we are'' - Annias Nin.

Believe it or not we have about 70,000 thoughts a day—if we tried to analyse each one, we’d be stuck in an endless loop. Instead, we develop default ways of thinking (or screensavers) based on our experiences, whether recent or from long ago.

These default thoughts can be like dirt on the lenses through which we view the world, ourselves, and others.

CBT helps us examine our  perception and responses that both emerge from and feed back into each other,  clouding our lenses and keeping us stuck in unhelpful cycles.

By understanding our default thinking styles, we can learn to break free from these patterns and more often think more clearly and respond more helpfully for ourselves.

CBT is the recommended first-line treatment for most common mental health issues, backed by a robust evidence base. While CBT follows certain structures and protocols, the best practice is always tailored to your unique needs.

We Make sure that CBT is delivered flexibly and creatively and guide you to where you need to be.

HOW CBT CAN HELP

HOW CBT CAN HELP

How EMDR can help

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy is a type of therapy designed to help you deal with difficult memories, like those from traumatic events or those behind phobias. Imagine being able to lessen the sting of bad memories so they don’t bother you as much in your everyday life—that’s what EMDR aims to do. It uses a technique that involves guiding your eye movements while you recall these memories, which can help change how these memories affect you emotionally.

What’s great about EMDR is that it can work faster than some other therapies, so you might start feeling better after just a few sessions. It’s especially good if you’ve been feeling stuck or if traditional talking therapies haven’t worked for you. Many people who try EMDR find that their troubling memories become less intense and less upsetting, making it easier for them to enjoy life and handle day-to-day situations. If you’re struggling with painful past experiences and looking for a way to move forward, EMDR therapy could be a really helpful option for you.

HOW CBT CAN HELP

Excellent listening skills and very effective challenges set throughout.

July 2024

I feel like my clinician has been very helpful during these last few months. He has listened to how I feel and helped me understand more about anxiety and PTSD. He has also understood how difficult I have found it and has never rushed or been to pushy about something and has always went at a pace I have found comfortable

May 2024

James and I were able to get to the root of what the problem is and what we could change pretty quickly, he has helped improve things for me.
